Jacy Jayne is riding high as the reigning NXT Women’s Champion and TNA Knockouts Champion, but she hasn’t forgotten the conversation that changed everything for her career.
Speaking with Brad Gilmore, Jayne opened up about the moment she realized she needed to step up her game — and it all started with some blunt feedback from WWE Creative and Shawn Michaels.
Jayne admitted that there was a period in her career when she became comfortable with her spot, even if it wasn’t at the top of the card. She was consistently on television, always part of a storyline, but never in the main event picture. That comfort was shattered after a talk backstage that completely changed her mindset.
“I feel like at one point I just kind of got complacent and I was like I’ve always been on TV. There’s never been a time that I was taken off of TV or I wasn’t in a storyline. It was just I was not, you know, like you said, one of the chosen ones, one of the main girls. So I feel like I got complacent for a minute and was like, well, at least I’m still on TV — could be worse, I guess. But then I remember having a talk with Creative and Shawn and they basically were like, you know, you need to be consistent. Like you’re a great number two, you’re just not a number one yet. And I took that so personal. Like that lit such a fire under me and I was like, ‘Oh, really? I’m not a number one. Okay.’ So then I got super motivated. I started taking night classes on top of my regular training at the PC. I was training my ass off for months just waiting for a chance.”
That chance came in a big way this year when Jayne shocked the wrestling world by capturing the NXT Women’s Championship and later adding the TNA Knockouts Championship to her resume. Her rise from “great number two” to double champion is a testament to her determination and refusal to settle for a supporting role.
Jayne’s story is a reminder that in wrestling — and in life — one honest piece of feedback can be the spark that changes your entire trajectory. She took those words from Shawn Michaels not as a putdown, but as fuel to prove she could be the top star she always believed she was.
