IYO SKY has become one of WWE’s most successful women, but behind her rise to the top is a personal battle she continues to face every day. The former Women’s and Women’s World Champion admitted that performing in English has been one of her toughest challenges since joining WWE.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on the Insight podcast, SKY revealed that even simple speaking segments cause her a lot of stress.

“Every single day I struggle to speak English… Promos make me so nervous, even only short line, makes me so nervous. Even backstage promos, everything.”

SKY explained that while she studied English in school back in Japan, it only covered the basics like grammar and writing. When it came to actually speaking, she didn’t get much experience. After signing with WWE, she tried to bridge the gap by attending classes — but they weren’t enough.

“I went to English school once I get contract with WWE. But [the school was] only 30 minutes in a week or one hour a week or twice a week or something like that. So it didn’t so much help, better than nothing.”

Despite those obstacles, SKY continues to push herself. She said her biggest motivation is making sure young fans watching WWE on television can clearly understand her.

“We are on TV. Behind the screen, behind the camera, has a lot of children [watching.] So that’s why I’m always careful [to] speak proper English.”

IYO SKY’s journey shows just how much she values connecting with fans, even when language becomes a hurdle. Her commitment to improving herself both inside and outside the ring has been a major part of her growth as one of WWE’s top stars.
