Hulk Hogan’s inner circle reportedly tried everything they could to stop him from making one final, costly mistake. Before undergoing a high-risk neck surgery, Hogan’s family told him point-blank that the procedure could backfire—and that his lifestyle wasn’t built for the required recovery.
During a conversation with Danny Jones, Bubba the Love Sponge revealed Hogan’s loved ones—including his daughter Brooke, son Nick, and wife Sky—urged him to avoid the surgery altogether. The concern wasn’t just about going under the knife, but what would happen after: Hogan wasn’t the kind of man who could sit still.
“His family actually argued with him and said, ‘Terry, just live with the pain,’” Bubba shared. “Because they knew the complication rate of this particular aggressive procedure. They knew.”
Hogan had already been through a string of back surgeries, but his neck had mostly been left untouched. Bubba said Hogan described his condition in painful terms:
“He had numbness in his hands… he would tell me all the time, ‘I can’t even feel my fingers.’”
But the issue wasn’t just the surgery itself—it was Hogan’s refusal to slow down. Bubba claims everyone around him, including daughter Brooke, son Nick, and wife Sky, urged him not to go through with it.
“Most of his family—from Nick to Brooke to Sky—they were telling him: ‘Terry, just live… you’ve lived with having numbness in your fingers. Don’t get this neck surgery. Don’t get it,’” Bubba explained. “We’ve talked to the doctors. It’s very risky. And you’re not going to sit still the way you’re supposed to. So don’t do it.”
Their fears turned out to be justified. Hogan went under the knife—and just 46 hours later, he was already back on the road, doing autograph sessions and beer appearances across multiple states.
“He was supposed to be bedridden four to six weeks,” Bubba said. “He spent 46 hours at home and is already out in Milwaukee and Green Bay and Michigan doing these three- and four-hour personal appearances for his beer.”
Bubba said Hogan’s habit of standing for hours at signings—because it made him look larger than life—further sabotaged any hope of recovery.
“His neck operation doesn’t really have an opportunity to fuse and to heal itself,” he explained. “You’re sleeping in hotel bedrooms and you’re standing up for hours. Hogan’s one big thing is when he would do an autograph session he would never sit. He always prided himself on standing because it made him bigger than life.”
Bubba even added a jab at Hogan’s physical size and wear-and-tear, “Terry had a huge head… his head probably weighed 40 lbs.” In the end, Bubba believes Hogan’s own ego may have sealed his fate.
“Had he listened to his doctors and not been on the road 46 hours after a major operation, he probably would have been in a better situation.”
It wasn’t just medical advice Hulk Hogan turned down—it was the voices of the people who loved him the most. According to Bubba, Hogan’s final downfall came because he couldn’t slow down, even when his body—and his family—begged him to
