Hulk Hogan’s life story was in the middle of being told when it suddenly came to a heartbreaking halt.
According to a report from Matthew Belloni of Puck News, Hogan had been working closely with WWE and Netflix on an in-depth docuseries about his life and legacy before his death on July 24. The project had been kept under wraps, but filming was already well underway—with more than 20 hours of new interviews completed.
“The Hulkster died mid-documentary,” Belloni wrote. “Hulk Hogan, who died today at 71, will be remembered for mainstreaming pro wrestling and bringing down Gawker. He also left behind an unfinished docuseries on his life that Netflix has quietly been working on since last year, per sources.”
The docuseries was being produced by Words + Pictures, the team behind major sports documentaries like The Last Dance. Director Bryan Storkel and executive producer Connor Schell were reportedly leading the project, which was intended to cover both Hogan’s rise as wrestling’s biggest star and his complicated public life in and out of the ring.
The revelation comes as WWE prepares to pay tribute to Hogan during SmackDown, reaching out to Hall of Famers and wrestling legends to appear on the show or film tribute packages.
As previousyr, Hogan had been dealing with serious health issues before his death, including renal failure, fluid overload, and severe COPD. He was moved out of the hospital and into his Clearwater home, where his house was converted into a medical unit. In his final days, he lost the ability to speak.
Emergency responders were called to his home on the morning of July 24 for cardiac arrest. He was later pronounced dead at the age of 71.
As for the Netflix docuseries, there is no word yet on whether the project will be completed or when it might be released. But what’s already been captured could now serve as Hogan’s final message to the fans he cherished.
