How a Wrong Phone Number Almost Stopped Montez Ford and Bianca Belair from Dating

Bianca Belair and Montez Ford are one of WWE’s most beloved couples but a wrong phone number almost stopped them from dating in the first place.

While speaking on the Dope as Usual podcast, Montez Ford said he and Bianca Belair didn’t meet in a fancy or romantic movie-style way. Montez said it wasn’t like Hollywood at all. At first, it felt like they were both a little nervous around each other. He remembered bumping into her once and just wanting to make sure she was comfortable with everything.

“You know, Hollywood has this stigma of all this romanticism, like how stuff happens. None of that stuff’s real. It don’t happen that way. The way ours happened—it felt like we were actually afraid of each other at first. I remember one time we bumped into each other. I just wanted to make sure this was something she wanted to do, you know. The consent.”

Bianca Belair recalled the very first time she saw Montez Ford. Her reaction was immediate since she thought he was incredibly good-looking and told herself to stay away from him. Then right after she arrived, Montez got injured and vanished for about two months. She noticed his absence right away.

Later, a coworker organized a sushi dinner so everyone could hang out and get to know each other. When Montez walked into the restaurant, Bianca was starstruck. She whispered to her friend how cute he was, and in that moment, everything around her seemed to move in slow motion.

Belair tried talking to Montez that night, but he wasn’t giving her any attention. It was during the NBA Finals and while the group was planning to go see a movie afterwards, Montez said he was going to skip it and watch the game instead. Bianca called him out on it, asking why he’d ditch the group, and that guilt-tripped him into coming along.

As they walked into the theater, Bianca made sure to stand next to him, hoping they’d sit together. But once they sat down, Montez left a seat between them. That moment frustrated her and she figured it was a lost cause.

“The first time I saw him, I was like, ‘Yo… that’s a beautiful man. Keep him away from me.’ And then when I got there, he got injured and disappeared for like two months. I was like, ‘Dang, where’d he go?’

Then one of our coworkers put together this sushi dinner, just for everyone to get to know each other. He walked in and I whispered to my friend sitting next to me, ‘Girl, girl, look. He right there. He’s so cute.’
And I know you say things don’t happen like in the movies, but I promise you—when he walked through that door, it was like slow motion. Everything just slowed down. I was like, ‘That’s that beautiful man right there.’

Then he sat down, and I’m trying to talk to him all night, and he’s paying me no mind. It was during the NBA Finals, and we were about to go to the movies. He was like, ‘Well, I’m not going to the movies. I’m going to watch the game.’And I said, ‘So you’re not going to the movies with us? We’re all going! You just going to leave us hanging?’ And he’s like, ‘Uh… okay, I guess I’m going to the movies.’

So, we’re walking into the theater, and you know how whoever you’re standing next to is who you’ll sit next to? I purposely stood next to him so we’d end up side by side. We were seeing a scary movie—which I don’t do—but I was trying. Then I sat down and saw he left a seat between us and sat on the other side. I’m like, ‘Okay, forget it. Whatever.'”

After the movie, they all went to a bar. Bianca had already given up on getting his attention when Montez surprised her by saying he liked her makeup. She was shocked and asked him about it. He said he always liked it. That’s when she realized he had been watching her too, but was just nervous.

From that day on, they were mostly always together except for one mix-up. Bianca accidentally gave Montez the wrong phone number.

Bianca Belair: “After the movie, we all went to this bar. I had given up. But then he looks at me and says, ‘I like your makeup.’ And I was like, ‘You like my makeup?’ He said, ‘I always like your makeup.’
I said, ‘Always? So you’ve been looking at me?’ He said, ‘I was nervous.’ And that was the first thing that came to his mind.”

Montez Ford: “Well—she gave me the wrong phone number. She says she didn’t mean to, but to this day, I swear she did it on purpose.”

The next day, Montez tried to text her, but she didn’t reply. Then she liked one of his Instagram posts, which confused him even more. Later on one of his friends texted him, saying Bianca left her phone charger in his car. Montez wondered how the friend had her number. Turns out, the number Bianca gave Montez was off by one digit, and that’s why they weren’t able to text each other.

“She gave me the number and the next day, I texted her—just checking in, making sure she slept well and everything. No response. Then I go on Instagram, post something, and she likes it. I’m like, ‘Okay, she likes my post but won’t text me back? What’s going on?’

Then one of my buddies—who was actually sitting next to me—texts me like, ‘Hey, Bianca says she left her charger in your car.’ And I’m thinking, ‘First of all, how you got her number? Did she give you the right one?’ Turned out, he had the correct number. She just gave me one digit off. So we both had the wrong numbers.”

Bianca Belair said she was sitting at home feeling sad, wondering why he didn’t message her. She didn’t want to DM him in case he wasn’t interested, so she asked his friend to tell him about the charger. That’s how they finally figured out what had happened.

“I really was sitting in the tub all sad. I was like, ‘Why is he not texting me back?’ And I did leave my charger in his car. But I didn’t want to DM him—what if he didn’t want to talk to me? So I texted his friend instead, like, ‘Tell him I left my charger in his car.’ That’s how we figured it all out.”

At the time Montez was heading to a casino, feeling confused and ready to move on. But when he got the message, he decided to turn around and go get food instead. That night became their first real date. After that, they stayed together and now it’s been almost nine years.

“No responses. I was like, ‘Man, I’m about to go gamble my life away.’ We were headed to the casino. I stopped because the text came through. I was like, ‘You know what, let’s turn around and get some food instead.’ We went on our first date that night… and we haven’t separated since.”

Bianca Belair and Montez Ford’s love story almost ended before it really started but fans are glad they managed to reconnect and get together. After all, they remain one of WWE’s power couples and that’s all that matters in the end.
