One of WWE’s most bizarre and unforgettable characters didn’t start with a creative meeting — it started as a locker room joke that spiraled into television history.

Former WWE star Midian recently pulled back the curtain on how the Naked Mideon character came to life, revealing that it all began with Kurt Angle unknowingly setting the stage backstage. According to Mideon, Angle had a habit of lingering around the locker room in just a towel, which became a running joke among the roster. Eventually, Mideon decided to turn the situation into a competition of his own. Mideon explained that after one match, he made it his mission to outlast Angle in nothing but a towel, staying partially dressed through multiple matches just to win the unofficial contest.

“This is what happened. We were in the locker room and Kurt Angle would get undressed and go take a shower or get undressed and just kind of hang around the locker room naked or with a towel on for a long time. So we started calling him Naked Man and all that stuff. Then after a match somewhere, I’m like second match, and I’m like I’m going to beat his record. So I get out of second match, I come back, I get undressed, take a shower, come back out, just put a towel on for match three, four, five, six. I think it was at the end of the night. And Kurt came back, he took a shower, stood around in the towel for a while and then he puts his underwear on and I was like, ‘I win.’”

That moment turned into something far bigger than a locker room prank. Mideon recalled that right after declaring victory, he was unexpectedly called to participate in a meet-and-greet — forcing him to walk out into public wearing nothing but a fanny pack. He said the reaction backstage was immediate, with everyone losing it at the sight. That unexpected moment soon reached Vince McMahon, who saw potential in turning the joke into television gold.

“And just at that moment, somebody came in and said, ‘We need somebody for a meet and greet.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’ And I just grabbed my fanny pack and put it on over my naked body and walked out into the hallway and everybody lost it. Then the next day at TV, they said, ‘Oh, Vince wants to see you.’ So I went in there like, ‘I haven’t done anything yet. What’s the matter?’ I walked in there and he said, ‘I hear you were running around backstage just in a fanny pack.’ And I was like, ‘Oh yeah, this is a story, blah blah blah.’”

That conversation with Vince McMahon quickly turned into a creative pitch that would become one of the most memorable comedy bits of the Attitude Era. Instead of punishing the behavior, McMahon leaned into it — suggesting that Mideon repeat the stunt in front of a live audience.

“He said, ‘What if you ran through the crowd and jumped into the ring in just a fanny pack and ran out?’ I said, ‘Do you want me to run through the crowd in a fanny pack?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah. We’ll do it during the dark matches and then if it gets a pop, we’ll do it again during the show.’ So we did it and everybody thought it was hilarious.”

Moments like this show just how unpredictable WWE’s Attitude Era could be. What started as a backstage joke turned into a full-blown character that fans still remember decades later, proving that sometimes the wildest ideas came from the most unexpected places.
