Hornswoggle isn’t interested in revisiting one of the most recognizable parts of his WWE persona—and now he’s explained exactly why.
During a new interview with Chris Van Vliet, the former WWE Superstar opened up about the bizarre creative decision that shaped his silent, gremlin-like character for years—and why he’s drawing a hard line on ever doing it again.
Hornswoggle, real name Dylan Postl, said the choice to never speak on television wasn’t his—it came straight from Vince McMahon, who wanted him to be more creature than person.
“It just says, ‘God damn it, you’re going to live under the ring. You’re going to grunt.’ I will never grunt again in my life.”
Despite the character becoming a fan favorite during the late 2000s, Postl made it clear that he has no interest in bringing back the infamous grunt—even when fans request it through Cameo.
“I get Cameos that want me to do the quote-unquote Hornswoggle noise. Not a chance. If I can talk, I’m a real [expletive] human. I can talk now.”
For years, WWE portrayed Hornswoggle as a silent, chaotic sidekick—something closer to a fantasy creature than an actual person. He compared his role to Gollum from Lord of the Rings and said that the character was never supposed to be grounded in reality.
“I was essentially Gollum—or Schmeagle, or whatever that thing is. What’s his name? Lord of the Rings? Yeah—Gollum. My precious.”
He added that the original pitch was for him to be a strange gremlin who lived under the ring and made weird noises.
“That’s all it was supposed to be—I was just this little gremlin that lived under the ring.”
Hornswoggle may appreciate the ride WWE gave him, but he’s made peace with moving on from that era. As far as he’s concerned, the grunting stays in the past—permanently.
