Harley Cameron may be shining as AEW Women’s Tag Team Champion today, but her path nearly took a very different turn—one that almost landed her in WWE.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Cameron revealed that before signing with AEW, she had serious discussions with WWE and even received support from the company early in her wrestling journey.
“I will say thank you to them, because thanks to them I have my green card,” Cameron said. “Thanks to them, I learned to wrestle, they helped me with wrestling training for Flatbacks.”
Cameron was never formally signed by WWE, but they helped facilitate her training at Flatbacks Wrestling School, run by Tyler Breeze and Shawn Spears. She explained that during that time, WWE went through internal restructuring, which may have impacted the momentum of their interest.
“I believe they went through a transitional stage where, in their office, certain people were released from the company, they went through some big changes, and fate just didn’t lead me in that direction.”
In the meantime, AEW came calling—and quickly took notice of her potential.
“In the interim of not knowing what was going on, [I] had an opportunity to be at AEW Dark, then I had another opportunity there, and was offered the contract with AEW.”
Cameron reflected on how close she came to heading down a completely different path:
“I don’t know whether interest was lost in the journey but AEW found me and I’m very lucky they did… I was in communications back and forth, but it’s not like I got a contract offer. That was my initial first goal—was definitely going that direction.”
Now thriving in AEW and part of a successful tag team with Willow Nightingale, Cameron credits the company—and Tony Khan specifically—for taking a chance on her despite her limited in-ring experience.
“Tony Khan has given me so many amazing opportunities, and I’m so lucky he took a chance on someone who only had 21 matches… Sometimes when you think the universe is saying no, it’s because they have other plans.”
From green card sponsorship to early wrestling lessons to AEW gold, Harley Cameron’s path has been anything but predictable—but it’s clear she’s landed exactly where she was meant to be.
