GUNTHER might have disappeared from WWE TV for the past few weeks — but don’t expect the Ring General to miss WrestleMania 42.

After weeks of uncertainty tied to Rey Mysterio’s rib injury and the rumored collapse of their planned WrestleMania match, a new update is shifting the conversation in a big way. According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select on March 26, 2026, WWE sources still expect GUNTHER to have a major role at WrestleMania — regardless of how the Mysterio situation plays out.

WWE sources indicate that GUNTHER is still expected to have a substantial role at WrestleMania 42, with one source noting that having him miss the show would not benefit anyone involved.

The original plan, as previously reported, had GUNTHER’s feud with Dragon Lee building toward a major WrestleMania match with Mysterio. That direction was thrown into question after Mysterio suffered fractured ribs ahead of the Royal Rumble, leaving his availability unclear. At the same time, GUNTHER’s absence from WWE programming hasn’t helped calm speculation.

His last appearance came on the March 2 episode of Raw, where he defeated Dragon Lee in a brutal segment that saw him rip off Lee’s mask — a moment that felt like a clear step toward a bigger WrestleMania payoff.

Since then, he’s been off TV — and that silence only fueled concerns that the entire plan might be falling apart. Now, this latest update paints a very different picture. Despite his absence from television, the belief within WWE is that GUNTHER will still have a meaningful presence at WrestleMania 42.

In other words, even if Mysterio isn’t cleared in time, WWE isn’t planning to leave GUNTHER off the card. Whether that means a replacement opponent, a reworked storyline, or a completely new direction remains to be seen — but internally, there’s no expectation that he’ll be sidelined.

With WrestleMania 42 just weeks away, that puts the focus squarely on WWE’s next move. The company may still be waiting on Mysterio’s medical status — but at the same time, it’s clear they’re not willing to let one of their most dominant stars miss the biggest show of the year.

Do you think WWE should stick with the original GUNTHER vs. Rey Mysterio plan if he gets cleared, or pivot to a new opponent and storyline? Drop your thoughts and feedback below.
