Gunther is set to face John Cena in what’s being billed as the WWE legend’s final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025. But ahead of the career-ending clash, Gunther made it clear that while Cena may be the GOAT of sports entertainment—that’s not how he defines himself.

Speaking with People.com, the former Heavyweight Champion didn’t mince words when comparing his approach to Cena’s legacy.

“I don’t consider myself a sports entertainer. I consider myself a professional wrestler. Maybe that’s where the distinction is in this whole thing. It’s undeniable: He’s the greatest of all time. He’s the greatest sports entertainer of all time. And that’s how I always saw myself as different.”

Gunther’s comments make one thing crystal clear—this isn’t just another dream match. It’s a culture clash. While Cena embodies WWE’s big-show charisma and Hollywood flair, Gunther is bringing the physicality and no-nonsense intensity that’s made him one of the company’s most dominant forces in recent years. Still, he acknowledged the moment is huge and something he doesn’t take for granted.

“Obviously it’s a big deal and I am proud to be in that situation. I came up in Europe and took a different route to WWE than everybody else and I represent a little bit of the new wave of wrestlers to have come into WWE recently. I guess if you compare it like that, it really is a passing of the torch match because it’s two different styles and two completely different generations. It makes me proud to be the guy that got picked for that.”

Gunther’s not here for the flash—he’s here for the fight. With Cena’s retirement looming, this showdown is less about respect and more about identity. One man built a legacy on charisma, catchphrases, and championships. The other is coming to end it with cold precision and zero flair. And if Gunther has his way, Cena’s final chapter won’t be a feel-good farewell—it’ll be a violent reminder that wrestling still hits harder than entertainment.

What do you think about Gunther drawing the line between wrestler and sports entertainer? Is it fair to say Cena and Gunther represent different eras—or something more? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
