Goldberg may have gone out in a match against GUNTHER, but the WWE Hall of Famer isn’t exactly thrilled with how his retirement went down.
While speaking to Ariel Helwani, Goldberg reflected on his final bout at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta — and he didn’t hold back on his disappointment about the execution.
According to Goldberg, although he was grateful to face GUNTHER, he had always envisioned his retirement match taking place under different circumstances. A live television taping on a Saturday night in Atlanta wasn’t exactly the dream sendoff he had in mind.
“Yeah, I mean, I—I can’t say that I was too thrilled about part of that, but…”
When Ariel asked what part specifically rubbed him the wrong way, Goldberg got to the point.
“Not—well, I mean, the Saturday Night’s Main Event and live TV in Atlanta. I mean, you always have your dreams of how you’re going to do things. And ultimately to have a little bit more control over the time and the space would have been much more preferred, let’s just put it that way.”
He then explained that his frustrations weren’t just about the venue—it was also about how WWE handled his goodbye on-screen. He revealed he was cut off almost immediately when trying to speak to the fans after the match.
“Yeah, absolutely. They cut me off for freaking 20 seconds with the microphone in my hand, for God’s sakes… I got two weeks before I can really, you know, spill the beans and, you know, make my feelings kind of known about the entire rundown from the inception of the idea to its delivery. It was a little less than to be desired.”
Goldberg’s honesty adds another layer to what was supposed to be a celebratory moment. While he respects GUNTHER and was proud to go out against him, it’s clear he wanted more control and a bigger stage for what he called his final chapter.
