Goldberg isn’t just closing out his in-ring career with a bang—he’s doing it in a city that helped build him.
During a new interview with 11Alive, the WWE Hall of Famer opened up about why Atlanta was the only place he would consider for his retirement match. For Goldberg, the connection runs deep. From his college days with the Georgia Bulldogs to his time in the NFL and eventually becoming one of WCW’s biggest stars, Atlanta has always been part of his DNA.
“I have a plethora of memories and coming back to Atlanta and the area is like coming home. Uh, the fans that I have there, uh, whether it be from football, from the, the Bulldogs to the Falcons to WCW and WWE back in the day, uh, I’m so appreciative. That the fans are so rabid and so loyal there and there would be no other place to have my retirement match than Atlanta.”
He explained that his career path kept circling back to Georgia, including the long daily drives to WCW’s legendary training facility.
“That’s why. The fans have always been there, and they’ve been with me through thick and thin, and they’ve been with me through career change. They’ve been with me from college to professional football to professional wrestling because I didn’t go to New York and do the WWE. I was a WCW talent and I was, I was homegrown and I went down to that power plant every day. I lived up in Dawsonville next to Bill Elliott. You know, that was an hour drive to and from each day.”
Goldberg added that the Georgia Dome played a pivotal role in his legacy, both as an athlete and as a performer.
“I mean, look, the Georgia Dome, I played there as a NFL football player, then I won the world championship there. I mean, it means a lot to me to be in that town.”
Saturday Night’s Main Event at State Farm Arena will mark the end of an era for Goldberg—but for the man himself, it’s more than a farewell. It’s a homecoming.
