Goldberg’s final WWE match nearly started with a missed call—literally. The wrestling icon recently revealed that the phone call from Triple H to discuss his retirement match almost went unanswered because Goldberg thought it was just another spammer.

While speaking about how his WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event bout came together with SHAK Wrestling, Goldberg admitted the whole thing caught him off guard. He was out on his land when a call from an unknown number popped up.

“Yeah, it was pretty wild how it transpired. Obviously, it wasn’t the best-case scenario for me. I would have liked to have gone straight into a retirement match shortly thereafter the last time I had stepped in the ring, you know, so that I would be mentally and physically more prepared. But this time they actually gave me a little bit of time to prepare. So, as contradicting as that statement is, it turned out to be okay.”

At first, Goldberg didn’t even answer the call.

“Vince got fired and the company took on a whole different personality and infrastructure. And yeah, I mean, I’m out on my tractor mowing, you know, our acreage and I get a phone call from New York and it’s an unknown number — well, it’s an unknown number for me — and I didn’t pick up. And then I picked up the second time, and lo and behold, it was Mr. Levesque.”

He’s thankful now that he picked up the second time, especially after years of feeling rushed into past matches.

“So, I’m appreciative of the opportunity and also appreciative that they gave me more than three weeks to prepare for it.”

Goldberg also used the story as an opportunity to call out the spam call epidemic—and he didn’t hold back.

“You really don’t [know who’s calling anymore]. I had the conversation with my wife last week. I mean, half the phone calls we get are spam and personally, at this point, I believe it’s an invasion of privacy and it should be against the law. But that’s a whole other conversation.”

From mowing his lawn to preparing for his final in-ring showdown, Goldberg’s farewell to WWE nearly got lost in the noise of unwanted robocalls. Now, he’s getting ready to close out his career on his own terms—just not thanks to a spam filter.
