Goldberg has now admitted he broke character in a viral photo from his match against GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he laughed when GUNTHER chopped him.
While speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg addressed the viral photo of him laughing right after GUNTHER chopped him. He explained that he truly felt bad about it and wanted to apologize. First, he pointed out that he accidentally clipped GUNTHER with his right hand, and then admitted he laughed when the chop landed because he didn’t quite know what to expect.
Throughout his career, he’s felt chops here and there since they’re loud, they look painful and they leave solid marks on the skin. It’s a devastating move and, in his words, a great worked punch.
“I just really apologize. Number one, I clipped him with the right hand. Number two, man, I laughed when he chopped me. I didn’t know what to expect, because you feel these chops throughout your career a little bit. They’re loud, man, and they look like they hurt. You look at the skin, it leaves some good marks. It’s devastating, it’s a great worked punch, right?”
Looking back at the photo, Goldberg thought it was going to hurt even more than it did. It just startled him in the moment, which led to him breaking character and reacting with that laugh. He made it clear it wasn’t a rib or any attempt to downplay GUNTHER’s move; it simply caught him off guard.
“The photo — I thought it was gonna hurt more, that’s all. It just startled me and I didn’t mean to do that and I really do apologize. It’s not a rib, I’m not trying to downplay his move, it caught me off guard and I completely broke character.”
Goldberg went on to say he couldn’t believe he reacted that way because he truly respects and loves GUNTHER. Goldberg felt honored to have his last match with someone so talented. He said he’d love nothing more than to have a chop fest with GUNTHER and wrestle him ten more times, because each match with him only gets better.
“I just can’t believe I did that. I feel so bad, man, because I love that kid. To be able to have my last match with him, it was freaking awesome. The kid’s extremely talented, and man, I’d love to have a chop fest with him and have ten more of these matches, because each one you do with him is better.”
Goldberg ultimately lost to GUNTHER in his retirement match, but the fact that he felt bad about laughing at the chop just shows how respectful he is of the Ring General and fans are glad to see how he views GUNTHER in the end.
