WWE has seen a lot of changes ever since Triple H took over as Head of Creative as the company is truly on fire right now. However, not everything is perfect, as it appears that there is a lot of backstage frustration within the WWE women’s division.
While speaking on The Hump, Sean Ross Sapp was asked if the frustration in WWE was as bad as it was during the Royal Rumble 2022 or if it was about specific issues. He stated that he had talked to many women in WWE who were frustrated with how the women’s division was being booked. This has been a problem for a while, but it is not as bad as it was during the Royal Rumble 2022.
“Somebody asked me about women’s booking, and I said, yes, I have spoken with plenty of women in WWE who are frustrated with how the women’s division is booked. This isn’t a new issue, but it’s nowhere near the level of frustration seen around the Royal Rumble 2022.”
One example he shared was about a female wrestler who asked him to find out if she was listed as a babyface or a heel because she wasn’t sure. This showed how unclear things were for some wrestlers.
“For example, there has been a situation where a women’s WWE performer reached out to me and said, ‘Dude, can you find out if I’m listed internally as a heel or a babyface?’ And I was like, ‘Damn, okay.’
Sapp also mentioned that some WrestleMania 41 match ideas were rejected because certain wrestlers didn’t want to be in token tag team matches. They wanted the women’s division to be treated more fairly, especially since WWE contracts were getting bigger and TV ratings were strong when women were on-screen. They didn’t want to feel like an extra part of the show, they wanted to be a real part of it.
“I also know there have been WrestleMania pitches that were rejected because some talents don’t want to just be in token tag matches. They want things to be more balanced in the women’s division. They see that contracts are increasing, and viewership numbers are adjusting accordingly when women are on-screen. The women’s division isn’t a sideshow—it’s part of the show. A lot of talent has been left sitting on the sidelines.”
Many fans believe WWE still struggles to properly showcase and book the women’s division. Even Seth Rollins previously admitted that the division has not been given the attention it deserves.
Despite WWE’s progress, these backstage frustrations show that there is still a ton of work to be done in making sure the women’s division is treated as equally important as the men’s. As WWE continues to grow, it remains to be seen if the women’s division will get more focus on the main roster, especially with WrestleMania 41 approaching.
