WWE fans were excited earlier this year when R-Truth took on a more serious character. But after being off TV for weeks, he came back on the August 8th SmackDown as his old comedic character, which led to a lot of backlash online.
During SmackDown this week, R-Truth came back after his absence and had an interaction with John Cena. Truth was no longer Ron Killings and it was the same comedic gimmick fans were used to and John Cena gaslighted Truth into thinking he was responsible for Cena’s heel turn.
Following the show, a fan took to Twitter and pointed out how Ron Killings vanished from TV for a while, then came back as R-Truth on a random episode of SmackDown. He had even cut off his dreads on live TV, only to return to the same goofy character. They felt it was a waste and couldn’t help but laugh.
“so ron killings disappears from tv, just to come back and be r-truth on a random episode of smackdown? mind you he cut off his dreads on live tv just to go back to this goofy character. what a waste. you just have to laugh.”
Another fan blasted Triple H for being a bad booker. They think John Cena’s heel turn was so bad that WWE now ignores it. They believe the Ron Killings gimmick failed, so he was changed back to R-Truth. They also said the big storylines were bad, so WWE brought back Brock Lesnar.
“TRIPLE H IS A DOG S*** BOOKER! John Cena’s heel turn was so bad WWE pretends it never happened.
The whole “Ron Killings” thing flopped, so they turned him back into R-Truth. Every top story sucked…so they brought back Brock Lesnar.”
Another fan said the whole R-Truth to Ron Killings storyline ended up meaning nothing. They felt Triple H and WWE Creative want fans to forget everything that happened in the last six months after John Cena’s failed heel turn. They compared WWE’s approach to using a “Men in Black” memory wipe.
“So that entire R-Truth turning into Ron Killings storyline was for nothing. Seems like HHH and WWE Creative wants us to forget everything happened in last 6 months after Cena’s disaster heel turn WWE pulling off an MIB here.”
Another fan said the booking was terrible and made no sense, adding that this is why they prefer watching AEW instead, saying, “This is horrible, makes no sense. This is why we watch AEW.”
It didn’t stop there as a fan said R-Truth had momentum after cutting a promo but WWE did nothing with it, reducing him to a comedy character. They argued people often criticize AEW without reason, but in this case WWE’s booking was terrible and they should just let Truth go again since bringing him back didn’t do anything.
“Well that’s it huh. Cuts a promo had momentum behind him, did nothing, and brought him to being a comedy character. People like trashing on AEW for no good reason, but this is horrible. They should just let Truth go again. Proves no point in bringing him back.”
Fans are upset about R-Truth’s return because it shows a common WWE problem, changing characters suddenly and without consistency, which makes it hard for fans to stay interested. Many thought his “Ron Killings” character could have been something new and serious, but WWE made him go back to his comedy gimmick. So we’ll just have to see if Truth and Cena will have a meaningful program eventually, as we near the end of Cena’s retirement tour.
Was WWE wrong to abandon the Ron Killings push so quickly, or was bringing back R-Truth’s comedic side the right call? Sound off in the comments.
