Mickie James has strong opinions about how women should be seen in wrestling. On the March 30th episode of “WWE LFG,” she criticized female wrestlers for wearing “jazzed up lingerie.” Unsurprisingly, James has come under fire for hypocrisy with her remarks.
After Zena Sterling’s match, Mickie James praised her outfit and recalled fighting to move away from revealing gear during the Diva era. She then shared her frustration, saying it’s hard to take female wrestlers seriously when their outfits are too distracting, as all she could see was their bodies. She just thought that if women wanted to be taken seriously as wrestlers, they shouldn’t wear outfits that looked like “jazzed up lingerie.”
“I like your new gear. I lived during the Diva era, and we fought very, very hard to not have to wrestle in lingerie anymore. Since because I am a female, I can speak on this. It’s very frustrating when women go out there and wrestle and all I see is their ass. I can’t look past that—it’s all I see. It’s very distracting.
You want to be taken seriously as a wrestler, but you are pretty much wrestling in jazzed-up lingerie. And that’s my opinion. And that’s coming from someone who’s had their ass on TV a lot.”
Quite a few fans took to social media after what Mickie James had to say and they called her out. A fan on Twitter stated that Mickie James once made a V-sign gesture at WrestleMania, pointing out her hypocrisy, saying, “This coming from a woman who did a V sign at WrestleMania btw.”
Another fan called Mickie James a hypocrite, reminding her that she once kissed a woman on TV for Vince McMahon, saying, “But you tongued a woman on television for papa vince ha the hypocrisy of it all.”
A fan criticized Mickie James, saying that if she focused on the wrestling instead of appearances, she would see that these women are talented. They also felt she embarrassed herself with her comments.
“Well, if you would’ve focused on their wrestling and not their ass maybe you would’ve seen that these ladies can actually wrestle. I’m sorry but Mickie James made an ass out of herself for saying this.”
Another fan called Mickie James “weird” for her comments and accused her of being a subtle misogynist, even as a woman, saying, “@MickieJames you’re kinda weird for this and a subtle misogynist even if you’re a woman yourself”
A fan questioned Mickie James’ comments, reminding her of the revealing outfits she used to wear. They argued that wrestlers should be free to choose their own gear, saying, “Alright respectfully – does Mickie James not remember those little f****** skirts with a strip of fabric for underwear she used to wear? Cmon bruhhh – let them wrestle in the gear they want…”
Yet another fan accused Mickie James of being bitter and unfairly critical, pointing out that most wrestlers wear revealing gear. They also called her a hypocrite, referencing past moments in her career.
“Sounds like a bitter older woman who’s hating for zero reason. 99% of the roster is wearing gear that shows ass. It’s crazy that this is coming from her, a person who licked her hand after touching Trish’s private area & have several pics spread eagle for the world to see.”
It didn’t stop there as another criticized Mickie James, calling her comments hypocritical and claiming that sex appeal has always been her main appeal, saying, “Thats rich. Trashing sex appeal when thats all she has ever had tbh.”
Mickie James’ comments have definitely started a debate about how female wrestlers present themselves. Some believe attire affects how women are seen in wrestling, while others argue they should wear whatever they want without criticism. Regardless, James has a right to her opinion and that’s all that matters to her in the end.
