AEW is set to make its Australian debut next week with AEW Grand Slam: Australia, and there is a lot of excitement for the show. However, while it was previously stated that the event would be a televised show and not a pay-per-view, a recent social media post referred to it as a pay-per-view. Unsurprisingly, this has led to fans calling out AEW for the same.
AEW’s official Twitter account took to the social media platform and hyped up Grand Slam: Australia by pointing out they were just 7 days away from the event. However, the original tweet mentioned that the show was going to be a pay-per-view, saying, “We are just 7 Days out from #AEWGrandslam Australia on PPV at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre!”
While AEW edited the tweet and removed any mention of it being a pay-per-view, fans on Twitter called out the company for edit by bringing up what they did. One fan posted an image of the original tweet, saying, “Take 2 is it.” Another fan pointed out that they could see the edits, as they said, “We see those edits.”
Yet another fan called out AEW for forgetting to edit the scheduled tweet, saying, “When you forget to go in and edit a scheduled tweet!” The insults didn’t stop there as another fan pointed out that they couldn’t wait to see the pay-per-view, saying, “I can’t wait to see the PPV!”
A fan reacted by pointing out that AEW had previously stated the event was never supposed to be a pay-per-view. They also criticized Tony Khan, calling him a liar and one of the worst in the business, saying, “Lmao they said it was never supposed to be a ppv Tony is such a lying sack of s***. One of the worst to ever do it.”
A fan noticed that the original tweet was scheduled for 5 PM weeks ago and said the event was a pay-per-view. They believe this means AEW always planned it as a PPV and accused them of lying about it, as they said, “Wow. The original tweet was scheduled for 5 pm likely weeks ago and said PPV. So it was intended to be a PPV and y’all lied about it.”
Tony Khan recently addressed the scheduling change in an interview with Scott Fishman of TV Insider. He claimed that the event was always planned as a televised show. According to Khan, the decision was made based on the network’s request.
“Yes. Having this be a TV event has always been the plan. That’s something that the network wanted. It’s something the network brought to us recently as an opportunity to follow NBA All-Star Saturday. We saw it as a huge opportunity. It was a great vote of confidence for our partners at Warner Brothers Discovery. It will be one of the biggest nights of the year on TNT. It’s a great opportunity given the lead-in.”
AEW Grand Slam: Australia will be taking place on February 15th at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, but it’s understandable why many fans feel they got scammed after they didn’t get any refunds following the change in venue from the Suncorp Stadium. Nevertheless, the show must go on and we’ll have to see whether the event will turn out to be a successful one despite all the backlash.
