Will Ospreay is very proud to be one of AEW’s top stars right now and he waves the company flag whenever possible, which is why he’s bragged about AEW having a better in-ring product than WWE. However, Eric Bischoff has now called out Ospreay for looking like a goof due to his comments.
While speaking on 83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff, Eric Bischoff addressed Will Ospreay bragging about AEW having a better in-ring product than WWE. Bischoff said that claim is silly and makes AEW look bad.
Easy E explained that when you say things like that, fans start comparing both shows more closely, and it can backfire. Instead of helping AEW, it makes Ospreay look like a good.
“Will Ospreay continually going out there and maintaining that the in-ring product of AEW is light years ahead of WWE is comical. It’s a comical statement to make, it’s a ridiculous statement to make. It invites fans to look at your in-ring product from a subjective position. They’re comparing AEW to WWE, and you lose a lot of credibility that way. That’s not how you get people on your side—by making a statement like that and drawing attention to the differences between the two products. In this case, Will Ospreay ends up looking like a goof.”
Bischoff also said that while AEW does have some great moments, especially with wrestlers like Ospreay, the overall show has a lot of problems. He admitted he doesn’t watch every week, but he sees a lot of AEW clips online.
In his opinion, about 70% of what he sees isn’t very good. He said the good parts still stand out, but too much of the show reminds him of the bad days of WCW in 1991.
“Because if you look at the totality of the product, it’s really bad in some aspects—just the wrestling itself. Yeah, you’ve got some really cool high spots with guys like Will Ospreay. Good for him. But AEW as a whole? I’m sorry. About 70% of what I see—and no, I don’t watch every week, but I do see a lot of their content on social media—the good stuff is still great, but there’s a lot of it that looks like WCW in 1991, and not in a good way.”
This comes after Will Ospreay recently claimed that AEW outshines WWE in every aspect of professional wrestling, despite WWE having the likes of Randy Orton and GUNTHER. It didn’t even stop there as the Aerial Assassin even claimed that AEW is on WWE’s tail after just six years.
As AEW keeps growing and building its own style, it’s important to stay proud but also realistic. Will Ospreay’s excitement is clear, but Eric Bischoff has warned that making strong comparisons to WWE might actually hurt AEW more than help it and so we’ll have to see if Ospreay will take Bischoff’s advice.
