Brian “Road Dogg” James may have stepped away from WWE— but according to Eric Bischoff, another major wrestling company could benefit from bringing him in.

While speaking on the 83 Weeks podcast on March 7, 2026, Bischoff addressed Road Dogg’s recent departure from WWE’s SmackDown creative team and suggested that AEW should seriously consider hiring him. Bischoff first pointed out that Road Dogg could easily keep himself busy with appearances and fan events if he wanted to, though that kind of schedule isn’t always easy long-term.

“You know, Road Dogg could probably stay busy three or four weekends a month if he wanted to. But that kind of schedule isn’t easy. It’s fun at first, but traveling every single week can become a grind.”

Eric Bischoff said that despite the travel demands, appearances can still be rewarding — especially for someone with Road Dogg’s popularity and reputation in wrestling.

“Maybe Road Dogg is used to that and maybe he’d enjoy doing it because once you get over that initial hump, you start realizing how fun those appearances can be. And a guy like Road Dogg could make a significant amount of money doing them.”

But the former WCW executive didn’t stop there. Bischoff made it clear that if Road Dogg wants to stay involved in the creative side of wrestling, he believes AEW could use someone exactly like him. Bischoff also acknowledged that the idea may not be realistic given how AEW currently operates.

“If he still wants to stay involved in creative, personally I’d love to see him sit down with Tony Khan because he’s exactly the kind of person Tony Khan needs. Now, I don’t think that’s going to happen based on what I’ve heard about Tony and the way he likes to run things. That kind of fit might not work.”

Even then, Eric Bischoff argued that someone with Road Dogg’s experience could help address some of the issues he believes AEW’s creative direction currently has. He closed by suggesting that bringing in a veteran like Road Dogg could ultimately benefit AEW’s leadership as well.

“But Road Dogg is definitely someone who could help a company like AEW. If I were AEW and trying to strengthen the product, one of the first things I’d do is improve the creative side. Someone like Road Dogg could help with the weaknesses and flaws in the storytelling. Hopefully Tony eventually decides to take a different approach to the business, because Road Dogg could help him a lot. Bringing him in would be a smart move, and it could make Tony look good by strengthening the creative direction of the company.”

Road Dogg recently stepped away from his role on WWE’s SmackDown creative team as he didn’t enjoy his role getting changed, though reports indicate he remains under a WWE Legends contract, meaning he can still appear at WWE-related events and fan conventions — including activities during WrestleMania 42 week in Las Vegas.

Now the big question is whether Road Dogg stays connected to WWE through appearances only — or if AEW eventually tries to bring his creative mind into the fold.
