EC3 isn’t sold on how modern wrestling matches are put together, and he didn’t hold back when talking about what he thinks is missing today.
While speaking with Jasmin St. Claire on the Crazy Train Podcast, EC3 was asked about the difference between older wrestling and what fans see now. He agreed that many matches today feel different because storytelling and pacing aren’t always the focus. He made it clear that the issue isn’t about wrestlers doing impressive moves — it’s about how those moves are used and whether they actually mean anything to the audience.
“Yeah, totally. I’m big on that. And I think it’s going to take people like myself and others who feel that way to work within it and bring it back. But my one thing is like back in the day it was old-timers telling you, ‘You’re doing too much,’ kind of like yelling at a cloud where it’s like, ‘F** you, old man. You can’t go like me.’ But it’s not the case.”*
EC3 then explained that great matches should feel like they’re building toward something instead of just throwing moves together nonstop.
“If people are taught when and why and how — and a lot of like what I try to teach here and incorporate what I do now — is building momentum as opposed to just doing moves… I think that’s where great wrestling takes place — in that psychology and the story of the match.”
He added that even though modern wrestling has incredible athletes, fans won’t remember matches if there isn’t a story behind what happens in the ring.
“So it’s not saying they’re doing too much. There’s amazing things being done. It’s about how can you get the most meaning out of doing these amazing things. Because fans will remember that more than they’re going to remember a bunch of cool stuff that happened but they can’t name one thing.”
EC3 also pointed out that too many matches rely on the same predictable setups, which makes moments feel less special over time.
“Everybody’s seen the boot in the corner… elbow, move out of the way, whatever. But I think if you can find unique ways to transition into things… it’s going to be way better.”
The debate about modern wrestling versus old-school psychology has been going on for years, and EC3’s comments show he clearly believes storytelling still matters more than just flashy moves.
Do you agree with EC3 that modern wrestling relies too much on moves and not enough on storytelling, or do you think today’s faster style makes matches more exciting? Let us know your thoughts and drop your feedback below.
