Legendary referee Earl Hebner didn’t hold back when asked about modern refs during an interview with MuscleManMalcolm, and AEW’s Aubrey Edwards was front and center in the conversation.
When asked about today’s crop of officials in WWE and AEW, Hebner made it clear he respects Edwards’ in-ring work—but couldn’t resist tossing in an old-school-style jab along the way.
Aubrey… she thinks she’s a big superstar, but she’s a good ref. I’ll give her credit for that.
Hebner then referenced a recent AEW angle that saw Edwards involved in a spot with a guitar shot. That’s when he joked about the aftermath of the segment.
But last time I was at the AEW show, I asked the upper office — like, uh, I forgot his name now — but anyway, I go, ‘Why’d y’all hit her in the head with the guitar? It just makes her damn head bigger than what it is, you know? Come on, man.’
Earl Hebner’s shot at Aubrey Edwards may have raised a few eyebrows, but in true old-school fashion, he delivered it with a wink more than a punch. The veteran ref clearly sees Edwards as one of the standouts in today’s wrestling world—even if he can’t resist roasting her like it’s the locker room in ’97.
