Drew McIntyre just took a brutal verbal swing at John Cena—and made it crystal clear he wants nothing to do with the current version of the WWE icon.

During a new interview with Sports Illustrated, which dropped July 10, 2025, McIntyre was asked about Cena’s retirement talk and the possibility of a dream match before the 16-time world champion hangs it up. But instead of issuing a respectful challenge, McIntyre unloaded years of frustration and accused Cena of dodging him.

“I’ve never had a singles match with Cena. He’s been ducking me his entire career. Don’t know why. I’m sure he’d put a spin on it—as he always does. The problem is, I can spin things back verbally these days. Maybe that’s why he’s avoiding me.”

McIntyre even admitted that while he admired Cena’s mic skills during the infamous feud with CM Punk, he doesn’t think the current Cena is worth chasing anymore.

“He tore CM Punk apart that one week on the microphone with a pipe bomb. I enjoyed it. And I was like, ‘God, I’d love to come back at Cena on the microphone,’ but he’s not the same John Cena. He’s a little [soft] these days.”

He didn’t stop there. McIntyre made it clear he’s focused on the present—and the future.

“So, I don’t want John Cena. I want Cody Rhodes.”

That might sting for longtime fans who still want that marquee John Cena farewell match, but for McIntyre, there’s only one man on his radar—and it’s the Undisputed WWE Champion.

Drew McIntyre is no stranger to throwing verbal haymakers, but calling out Cena for “ducking” him adds serious heat to a feud that never even happened. If Cena does make one last run, this might be the spark that brings him face-to-face with a very bitter Scottish Warrior.
