Dominik Mysterio is no stranger to doing things his way—on WWE television or in real life. While speaking on What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon, the former tag champ opened up about the stories behind his tattoos, including how one of his boldest decisions came from pure spite during a family party.

It all started when Dominik was attending a gathering with his wife Marie Juliette’s extended family. “So we were at one of my wife’s family parties—big Portuguese family, 45 people over for any reason,” he said. That’s when an uncle made an offhand comment that Dominik wasn’t about to forget. “One of the uncles comes up to me and goes, ‘A lot more tattoos now. Just don’t ever do the neck.’ I said okay.”

Instead of letting it slide, Dominik immediately made a plan. “I texted my tattoo artist and said, ‘I’ll be in Vegas tomorrow, you got any openings?’ He said yeah. I said, ‘Cool. I’ll be there at 5. I don’t know what I’m getting, but it’s going on my neck.’”

On the 45-minute flight to Vegas, he landed on the perfect word. “Thought ‘villano’—villain in Spanish—sounded cool. So I showed up, got it done, and then told my wife. She said, ‘Okay, cool.’ She didn’t care.”

Dominik’s tattoo journey didn’t start there, though. He revealed he got his first ink at age 15—with the help of his dad, Rey Mysterio. “I got my first tattoo with my dad—not at the same time, but legally I couldn’t go to a shop ‘cause I was 15. He asked me, ‘What do you want for your birthday?’ I said, ‘I want to get tatted up.’ He said, ‘You’re 15, you can’t go to a tattoo shop.’ So we had his tattoo artist come to the house and tattoo me in the garage.”

That first piece? A verse from the Bible. “It was on my ribs—I got a Bible verse. Psalm 27:3. ‘Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident.’ I wanted it on my back and my dad said, ‘Don’t be a bitch, get it on your ribs.’ So I did. It hurt like hell.”

As for his most painful tattoo? That title goes to the ghost face from Scream—placed in a spot most would never dare. “Honestly, I have the Scream ghost face tattooed on my inner thigh. I feel like I really earned that because I didn’t understand how painful it was gonna be. It hit nerves that reached places I didn’t think it would.”

“Yeah, especially on the inner thigh—certain spots you’re like, oh no, that’s a whole different kind of pain. So yeah, that one’s my favorite just because of what I endured.”

Dominik also paid tribute to those who shaped him in wrestling. On one hand, he has ink honoring his godfathers: “Psychosis, Conan, and Viano Cuarto. And I also added La Parka, who’s not a godfather, but I loved watching him as a kid.” On the other, he carries the masks of lucha legends: “El Rayo de Jalisco, Mil Mascaras, Blue Demon, and Santo.”

“They were super painful too, but it was worth it. I haven’t seen anyone do the masks like this—so I hope I started a little trend there.”

From getting his ribs inked at 15 to marking his neck out of pure defiance, Dominik Mysterio is fully committed to his persona—in and out of the ring.
