Dominik Mysterio has been on a tear since he won the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 41, but fans have noticed how he’s really scaled back his moveset for a while now. With that in mind, Mysterio has explained why he doesn’t do as many moves now.

While speaking on the Intoxicados podcast, Dominik Mysterio was asked why he scaled back his moveset, especially the high-flying moves he had become known for. He explained the reason is that he wants to make his moves feel more special. He stated that wrestling has changed over time, and now many wrestlers do crazy moves like backflips, but if fans see those moves all the time, they don’t feel as exciting.

While he’s capable of performing those moves, he wants to make sure they stand out when he does them. He explained that when fans see him pull off a move that he doesn’t do often, it feels more special to them.

“There is a reason for it, and I feel like, uh, the reason I’m like that is because I—and this is just my personal opinion—um, I feel like you see that so much, right? You, especially nowadays, the way wrestling has moved on from what it used to be, right? From like, you go from chain wrestling to now doing lucha libre style, to a mixture of lucha libre and American style, and it’s like you have guys doing insane backflips, and you know, like, I can’t do half of that shit. Actually, I can do it. I’m sure I can.

Like, I can if I put in the time, like I was doing back then, but I feel like it’s more special. It’s like, you see it so often, right? But like, not from me. So when you do see it from me, you’re like, ‘Damn, did you see Dom do that move?’ Or like, ‘Damn, did you see Dom hit that?’ And it’s like, ‘He used to do that’ or ‘He doesn’t do it as much,’ but I want to make it mean something. I want it to be special when I do it.”

Mysterio added that if he were to hit a moonsault every match, fans would come to expect it, but by saving it for special moments the move becomes something memorable. Dominik Mysterio wants to keep his moves meaningful, and by using them sparingly, they have a bigger impact when he does them.

“Because now it’s like, if you go out there and wrestle, I don’t know, 100 times and you do a moonsault 90% of the time, the people are going to expect it. So, it’s like if I give it to them 10% of the time, it’s like when I do hit that moonsault, everyone’s going to be like, ‘Damn, did you see that moonsault?’ It’s just gonna, it’s going to mean more.”

Dominik Mysterio cares more about creating moments than constantly hitting fancy moves and it’s safe to say his method has been a success and fans really don’t want him to change things up anytime soon.
