Moore asks Lawler if there was ever any legitimate heat between him and Dusty Rhodes. Lawler says the only time there was any heat between him and Rhodes was when Rhodes and the company he worked for rolled into Memphis and booked a huge show in direct competition with Lawler’s Memphis Wrestling. This occurred at a time when wrestling territories were still respected, and this was a controversial move by Rhodes and his Atlanta-based promotion.
Lawler’s company decided to put together a super-card at a nearby venue and had free admission. Predictably, Lawler’s show was turning people away at the door and Dusty’s show drew only a smattering of people to the football stadium they rented. Dusty’s company took a significant financial loss that evening and these events led to some legitimate heat between the two men for some time.
Lawler says he went on to have a number of great on-screen interactions and in-ring matches with Rhodes. Much like Terry Funk, every time Lawler stepped in the ring with Dusty Rhodes he had fun. In Lawler’s opinion, Rhodes is the best in the history of the business in terms of communicating with fans and talking fans into the building.
