David Finlay is officially a free agent — but if you’re expecting an immediate WWE debut, pump the brakes.

After his New Japan Pro-Wrestling contract expired, speculation quickly ramped up about where the fourth-generation star could land. WWE and AEW were immediately floated as potential destinations, especially given Finlay’s family ties to WWE and previous reported contact between the two sides. Now there’s a clearer picture of where things stand — at least on the WWE side.

According to Fightful Select, there has indeed been contact between David Finlay and WWE. However, sources within the company say he is not currently factored into creative plans.

“Sources in WWE have said while there has been contact between David Finlay and WWE, he isn't factored in to creative plans at the moment.”

That doesn’t mean talks never happened — they did. But as of now, there’s no indication that WWE is actively building anything around him. It was also noted that there haven’t been any recent developments between the two sides.

“We have not heard any recent updates between David Finlay and WWE, but there was contact at one point between the two sides. As reported this week, NJPW is actively trying to re-sign him.”

So while the door isn’t necessarily closed, it’s not swinging open either. Meanwhile, NJPW is reportedly pushing hard to bring Finlay back under contract. That effort appears to be the most active development in his situation right now.

For fans expecting a sudden WWE appearance, the reality is more measured. There has been communication. There has been interest at some point. But creatively, WWE does not appear to be moving toward bringing him in — at least not yet.

Do you think WWE should fast-track David Finlay into their plans, or is he better off staying in NJPW or exploring AEW? Let us know where you see him landing.
