Corey Graves is giving full credit to Michael Cole for changing the course of his career — and it all started with one conversation.

After transitioning from an in-ring career to becoming one of WWE’s most recognizable voices, Graves is now revealing that the entire shift started unexpectedly — and he wasn’t even considering commentary at the time. Speaking to The Sportster, Graves explained that it all began after his injury, when a casual conversation with Cole changed everything.

“It was a chance conversation with Michael Cole after I got hurt, when I mentioned to him that I had done some radio in the past. The light bulb sort of went off in his head, and he went, ‘Hey, did you ever think about doing commentary?’”

At that point, Graves made it clear the idea hadn’t even crossed his mind — showing just how far removed he was from the role he would eventually take on. That’s when Cole stepped in and pushed him to try something new, encouraging him to get behind the microphone and see if it clicked.

“I said, ‘No, honestly, it never crossed my mind.’ And he said, ‘I want you to get in the booth at the PC and just try it out. Just see if you like it. See if you feel anything there.’”

According to Graves, that moment ended up changing the entire direction of his career — and he believes Cole saw it coming before he did. “And lo and behold, Michael Cole knew what the future would hold for me.” Graves didn’t stop at just telling the story — he also broke down what Cole actually taught him once he got into commentary, especially when it comes to understanding the rhythm of a live crowd.

“To me, the best indicator that something special is happening is just the crowd. And Michael Cole, I have to give all the credit to for teaching me how to feel those moments — when to lay out, when to just say nothing.”

He then drove home one of the biggest lessons he’s carried with him — knowing when not to speak can be just as important as anything you say.

“As much as we tend to be verbose and as many cool lines as I can come up with off the top of my head, there’s nothing I can say, or that Michael Cole can say, that will top 10,000, 20,000, or 60,000 people losing their minds. And I believe that holds true across all sports.”

This pulls back the curtain on one of WWE’s top commentary voices and shows just how much influence Michael Cole has had behind the scenes — not just calling matches, but shaping the next generation of announcers. Bottom line — Corey Graves’ commentary career didn’t just happen. It started with one suggestion from Michael Cole — and turned into a defining second act.
