WWE is gearing up for another major clash between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns—but fans hoping for a trilogy-ending showdown at WrestleMania may need to readjust their expectations.

According to Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE has officially begun internal discussions about running back the blockbuster WWE Championship feud that headlined WrestleMania 39 and WrestleMania 40. The company laid groundwork for this during Survivor Series WarGames, where Rhodes and Reigns had a tense confrontation after the match.

“The other story was Rhodes and Reigns having words at the end of the match. It’s been confirmed to us that a Rhodes vs. Reigns match for the WWE title is in the plans, although not necessarily at WrestleMania,” wrote Dave Meltzer.

That post-match moment wasn’t just fan service—it was part of a larger creative shift. WWE reportedly wants to keep Rhodes and Reigns linked in storyline, but may opt to stage their rematch at the Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia on January 31 or another premium live event instead of WrestleMania.

At the same time, WWE is keeping its options wide open. The Observer report states that several alternate matches are under consideration—each with serious implications for the company’s top titles.

“Rollins vs. Breakker, Reigns vs. Punk and Rhodes against someone else could be done,” Meltzer added.

This opens the door for CM Punk to step into the spotlight opposite Roman Reigns, especially after their brief interaction at Survivor Series. Punk’s involvement would certainly shift the creative dynamic and offer a fresh chapter in Reigns’ historic title reign.

Rhodes, Reigns, and Punk all found themselves on the same side during Survivor Series, teaming with The Usos in a losing effort against Drew McIntyre, Brock Lesnar, and their allies. The loss appears to have created new rifts, just as WWE prepares for its international stadium shows and sets the stage for WrestleMania season.

What do you think—should WWE hold off on Rhodes vs. Reigns until WrestleMania 42, or is a Royal Rumble showdown the better call? Drop your thoughts in the comments and let us know how you’d book it.
