WWE’s official acquisition of Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA is viewed as a massive business move that’ll change the landscape in a big way. In light of their acquisition, it appears WWE is now planning to have Cody Rhodes headline their upcoming event in Mexico.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE is planning a major event in Mexico. Multiple sources have confirmed this, and it’s expected to be announced soon.

Meltzer noted that WWE is pushing hard to expand its presence in Mexico, especially now that AEW has partnered with CMLL and WWE has bought AAA. This means the competition in Mexico is heating up.

“WWE does have plans for a major event in Mexico. Multiple sources have confirmed this and the likelihood it would be announced soon. WWE is very aggressive about dominating Mexico, particularly with the AEW and CMLL alliance and WWE’s purchasing of AAA, meaning they are doing to be heavily into competition there.”

The only detail known so far is that Cody Rhodes is expected to headline the event. However, WWE likely won’t do a pay-per-view or TV taping there because it wouldn’t be financially worth it. The Mexican government and local cities aren’t offering money to help bring WWE in, so those kinds of shows wouldn’t make sense cost-wise.

Cody Rhodes has remained absent from WWE television after losing the Undisputed WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 41. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see when he’ll make his return to WWE television as it’s very clear WWE has huge plans for him already.
