Cody Rhodes is opening up about what really made his WWE return possible — and according to him, it all comes down to one decision Brandi Rhodes made behind the scenes.
After years of speculation surrounding their 2022 exit from AEW, Cody addressed the situation head-on during a March 31, 2026 appearance on The Breakfast Club — and made it clear the key moment wasn’t about contracts or negotiations, but silence.
During the interview, Cody explained that when they left AEW, Brandi made a conscious choice to not publicly discuss the reasons behind their departure — even as narratives spiraled online.
“Yeah. So, when we left the company we helped create — AEW — it came down to her deciding not to talk about it. That departure, she was like, ‘We’re not going to talk about it. We’re moving on.’ Did bad stuff happen? Sure. Did good stuff happen? Yeah. But she said, ‘I’m not going to talk about it.’”
That decision, according to Cody, came with consequences — especially as speculation grew and fans filled in the blanks themselves. Still, Cody made it clear that Brandi choosing to stay quiet wasn’t weakness — it was sacrifice.
“One of the difficult things about not talking about why we left is that narratives get created. Stories get told, podcasts happen, fans think they know what happened when no one’s even been close. The selfless part is that she lives with that. She owns that. She respects not just where we are now, but also the place we left enough to say, ‘I’m not going to talk about it.’ And that made it easier for us to move forward. That was very helpful.”
He doubled down on that point, stressing that while both good and bad came from their AEW run, Brandi’s decision meant accepting public narratives she couldn’t correct. Cody also revealed he had to personally reassure Brandi about how she’s perceived — especially when stepping back into the WWE limelight.
“And again, good stuff happened there too. But that’s what I mean by selfless — because she lives with those narratives people create. Wrestling fans think they know. I had to remind her, ‘Hey, it’s not all the fans.’ WrestleMania 40 was the perfect example. I told her, ‘You’re going to come out with me.’ And when she did, the reaction was huge — big pop, big excitement. I just needed to nudge her and say, ‘See? Those are the real ones. They get it. They’re not mad at you.’”
Before this, Cody and Brandi had already touched on how their AEW departure led to them being portrayed in a much darker light, with Cody saying they were “rewritten” in a dramatic way. But this latest reveal shifts the focus entirely — framing their exit not as chaos, but as a calculated decision rooted in respect and long-term thinking.
In the end, Cody’s WWE return wasn’t just about contracts or timing. It came down to Brandi Rhodes choosing silence over fueling controversy, even if it meant carrying the weight of public narratives — a decision that ultimately helped open the door for his comeback.
