Cody Rhodes has become one of WWE’s biggest babyfaces of all time, but that hasn’t stopped fans from begging to see him embrace his darker side again. The “American Nightmare” addressed those calls head-on after fans dug up old clips of his heel run outside WWE.
It all started when a fan shared a throwback clip of Rhodes from his heel days in TNA, writing, “Man that Cody Rhodes heel run in WWE is going to be one for the ages.” Another fan chimed in saying they remembered that version of Cody and admitted they’d enjoy seeing it now: “Remembered this @CodyRhodes he was a d** but if this happens now i probably be happy.”*
Rhodes decided to respond, downplaying the nostalgia around those heel clips. He explained that people often overrate that part of his career because it didn’t lead to the same success as his current babyface run.
“😂 people cite this clip and the me spitting one and assume it was far better than it was 3 biggest gates of all time didn’t happen with the jerk in this vid It was a fun step on the journey though!”
Earlier this year, The Rock admitted that he pushed WWE to let Rhodes turn heel, but the company rejected the idea. Despite that, Cody’s response shows that he sees the value in sticking with what works. His character has evolved into one of WWE’s most marketable stars, and going back to the past doesn’t seem to be on his agenda.
Fans may still want to see Cody unleash a darker edge, but it looks like he’s comfortable carrying the torch as WWE’s top babyface for now.
