Cody Rhodes has been the Undisputed WWE Champion for a year now and a lot of it has to do with the fact that his promo game has been on point. In fact, Rhodes has admitted that everything he says is his own words in his promos.

While speaking on Pardon My Take, Cody Rhodes talked about how he doesn’t play a character in wrestling, he’s just being himself. He’s thankful that fans have accepted him, but he still sometimes worries that a crowd might not cheer for him, especially in places like Barclays Center or Chicago, which are known to be tough on wrestlers. But when he gets there, the fans usually support him.

The American Nightmare thinks part of the reason people connect with him is because of his family, especially the love they had for his dad. He’s also shared his full journey with the fans since coming back to WWE.

Everything he says and does in the ring is real, it’s how he truly feels. He doesn’t read from a script or pretend to be someone else. Maybe that honesty is why people like him. Even so, he’s still surprised every night by how much support he gets.

“Everything about me is… I don’t have a character, right? I am me. This is… and I’m really happy that it’s worked out. But I’m always expecting like, yep, today’s the day. Barclays or something, you know, like—or Chicago’s always notoriously a tough wrestling market. And then in those places, they’re like, ‘Nah, he’s cool.’

I don’t know the formula. I think there’s an element of being in the family and the love they had with my dad and the connection we have. I think it’s ‘cause I took them on the full ride from the time I was back at WWE. Also when we—when we do the suspension of disbelief in what we do… everything about me is real.

I’m not reading someone else’s words. These are my words. I’m not playing some role. It’s just me out there—what I think, how I feel, how I speak. And maybe that’s why it’s connected. I never know, but it still surprises me every night when they’re with me.”

With that said, Rhodes also revealed that John Cena doesn’t believe he is authentic enough as a character. Regardless, people connect with him because he’s honest, easy to relate to, and doesn’t pretend to be someone he’s not. In a world full of scripted promos and fake characters, Cody Rhodes shows fans what real storytelling is all about.
