CMLL is taking a firm stance after WWE’s acquisition of AAA, emphasizing their identity as the “home of true lucha libre” and reaffirming their status as a 100% Mexican company.

According to Ernesto Ocampo of Superluchas.com, the move has prompted CMLL to double down on their roots, vowing that as long as Arena México stands, “lucha libre will never die.”

While WWE’s acquisition of AAA has shaken up the landscape, CMLL’s response has been to maintain the status quo. Ocampo noted that there had been plans within CMLL to modernize their booking style and television production. However, those initiatives were abruptly shelved following WWE’s announcement.

“They also told the wrestlers that there won’t be any changes in the booking approach or in their contracts,” Ocampo reported. The lack of action has left some talent vulnerable, as WWE is now in a position to potentially swoop in and sign talent that CMLL failed to secure.

“This announcement should’ve triggered immediate action to draft new deals—contracts that would’ve locked the talent in with better pay and clearly outlined dates with New Japan, RevPro, and AEW. But that’s not going to happen. Incredibly, that’s not going to happen,” Ocampo added.

Now, CMLL finds itself at a crossroads, sticking to tradition while WWE continues to expand its reach in Mexico through AAA. Whether CMLL’s decision to hold firm will protect their roster or cost them some of their top talent remains to be seen.
