CM Punk has no time for fans who rage online just because things didn’t go the way they imagined.

The WWE World Heavyweight Champion didn’t hold back during his My Mom’s Basement interview while promoting his new movie Night Patrol. When the conversation shifted to the Stranger Things series finale and the polarizing finish to John Cena vs. Gunther, Punk fired off a blunt critique of modern fandom and its toxic relationship with fantasy booking.

“I don’t know if this is just like a stan culture thing or if I’ve just aged out of understanding. I certainly don’t understand. I see it in wrestling. I see it with fandoms like Stranger Things... People just seem to want to be angry about everything because it didn’t happen the way they fantasy booked it in their head. That’s a slight mental illness.”

Punk then turned his attention to wrestling fans who rely on internet “scoops” and let speculation drive their outrage.

“Like hey, I bought tickets to go to this wrestling show, and then I look on Twitter and Wrestling Journalist 345678910 reports that there’s gonna be a big surprise guest, and I go to this show and there’s no big surprise guest—and I spend an unhealthy amount of time complaining about that online.”

“Somebody that probably knows less about what they’re talking about than you do—just made some [expletive] up and passed it off as journalism, and you’re getting mad at that.”

He compared the whole situation to the way people reacted to Stranger Things’ ambiguous ending—another case, in his eyes, of people projecting expectations onto something they don’t control.

“It’s okay to be a fan. And it’s okay to enjoy things. And it’s okay to not enjoy things too. But the way people just grandstand about it is… it’s a little mental to me.”

Punk’s honesty isn’t surprising, but calling overreactive fan behavior “a slight mental illness” is definitely going to stir debate. Whether it’s wrestling storylines or Netflix finales, Punk is clearly tired of outrage-driven fandom.
