CM Punk has now explained why he feels his match during the January 6th Netflix debut of WWE RAW was a bigger deal than WrestleMania 41.
While speaking during the San Diego Comic Con, CM Punk talked about how much it meant to him to be in the main event of the first-ever Monday Night Raw on Netflix. He said the move to Netflix was a big change for WWE, and being chosen for that moment was really special to him, especially after everything he’s gone through.
The Second City Saint stated that the original plan was for him to have a singles match with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40. But then he tore his tricep, which forced WWE to change their plans.
When the Netflix debut came up, CM Punk saw it as an even bigger deal than WrestleMania. He said you only get one chance to be part of the first episode on a new platform, and being at the top of that show meant a lot to him.
“I mean, everybody realized that it was a big sort of transition forward, I think, for WWE in general. The fact that Monday Night Raw was moving to Netflix—and after the journey that I’ve been on—to realize that I’m headlining the premiere episode of Raw on Netflix?
Oh it didn’t just strike me in the moment. It resonated. Once they told me in the weeks leading up to it—little secret spoiler—I think me and Seth were headed to a singles match at WrestleMania. And then I went and tore my tricep, you know, for fun.
So I think the idea was maybe to reset and still head in that direction. But then the Netflix debut came up, and to me, that was a bigger deal than WrestleMania. Because you only get one shot at a first show—at making a first impression. And to be on top of that card? That meant everything.
Every time I walk in the locker room, I’m just like—I’m kind of flabbergasted that I’m surrounded by such talented people. So, you know, to main event on top of the first Netflix RAW was… yeah, it was a huge deal.”
CM Punk will forever be etched in history since he did main event the debut episode of Monday Night Raw on Netflix and so it’s not hard to see why that was a bigger deal for him than WrestleMania.
