CM Punk is opening up about how close his WWE return story came to never happening — and he says the timing of his WrestleMania moment played a huge role in bringing him back.

During a conversation with SHAK Wrestling at the WWE 2K26 hands-on event, Punk reflected on how meaningful it was to finally headline WrestleMania after years of believing that opportunity had passed him by. That moment became one of the defining chapters of his career, but he admitted the timing mattered more than fans might realize. Punk explained that if he had reached that milestone much earlier in his career, things could have played out very differently.

“If it had happened 10, 15 years ago, there’s probably a big part of me that might never have come back because there wasn’t anything on the horizon for me to kind of conquer, you know, no mountain to climb.”

That statement sheds light on how unfinished business helped drive Punk’s eventual return to WWE. Instead of closing the book years ago, the delayed opportunity gave him something to chase — and ultimately gave fans one of the biggest comeback stories in modern wrestling.

His return already reshaped the landscape once, but this comment makes it clear how much unfinished business factored into the decision to come back at all.

Do you think CM Punk would have stayed away from WWE if he had main-evented WrestleMania earlier in his career, or was his return inevitable no matter what? Drop your thoughts and let us know what you think.
