CM Punk finally got the moment he’d chased his entire career—main eventing WrestleMania. But while fans saw confidence and fire when he stepped into the ring at WrestleMania 41 with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, what happened behind the curtain was way more emotional.

Speaking with Complex News, Punk opened up about what it felt like to hit the top of the mountain. After years of pushing for the spotlight, he said the moment was everything he expected… and more.

“Oh no. All that was exactly what I’d imagined it was going to be. But it comes with a lot of pitfalls. It’s a super high-pressure situation. And especially with me, because I was so vocal about it for so long—it was pretty heavy.”

Punk described how Bret Hart gave him a heartfelt pep talk right before he walked through the curtain. But it was The Undertaker who brought him back down to earth in the most Undertaker way possible.

“Taker, bless his heart, brings the mood right back down—snapped me back into it. He grabbed me and went, ‘Well, don’t f** this up.’”*

That brutal honesty ended up being exactly what Punk needed in the moment.

“That’s actually what I needed right now. Everybody’s giving me these heartfelt speeches, hugging me, people are emotional, I’m crying… and [Taker] kind of brought the levity, like, ‘Oh yeah, okay.’ Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously. Even though this is a pretty heavy moment and I was feeling the pressure, I’m essentially just wrestling in front of thousands of people in my underwear.”

When the lights came down and the night was over, Punk didn’t hesitate to call it the dream-come-true experience he’d long envisioned.

“To me, it was a perfect night. It was everything I thought it was going to be. And it was everything it needed to be.”

CM Punk’s road to WrestleMania’s main event might’ve taken longer than most expected, but once he got there, he made it count—with the help of a legend who reminded him to stay grounded in the moment.
