CM Punk may have left RAW as WWE World Heavyweight Champion—but a nasty face-first landing could’ve landed him in concussion protocol.

On the January 6 edition of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that someone from RAW had been placed in WWE’s concussion protocol. While he didn’t confirm a name, he made it very clear who he thought it might be.

“Somebody on RAW last night, I was told, is in concussion protocol today. It’s not Bron Breakker, who landed on his head — Breakker was cleared after the show.”

Instead, Alvarez pointed to CM Punk, who had a rough landing during a tope suicida attempt in the night’s main event. Punk didn’t get caught on the dive and instead crashed straight to the floor.

“It’s possible it was CM Punk, because that guy landed right on his face… Punk went straight down and his head bounced off the black mats.”

He added that the Second City Saint didn’t seem totally “there” afterwards, despite finishing the match:

“If he wasn’t in concussion protocol after that, I would’ve put him there, because that looked brutal… if you watched after CM Punk landed on his face, he did not look like he was all there.”

Kairi Sane was also mentioned as a possible concern, but Punk’s landing was by far the scariest moment of the night.

“Oh yeah — Kairi took a Razor’s Edge and landed on the back of her head, but she kept doing the match. I mean, if you watched after CM Punk landed on his face, he did not look like he was all there. Kairi wrestled like she was all there.

That doesn’t mean one or the other didn’t have a concussion, but man — Punk did not look good after landing on his face.”

Alvarez clarified that concussion protocol doesn’t necessarily mean a confirmed concussion — WWE takes precautions when a wrestler takes a hard hit like that.

“Even being in concussion protocol doesn’t mean you had a concussion. That just means they’re checking you out.”

And now we know what Punk himself thought about the match. The morning after RAW, Punk appeared on Fox 5 New York, visibly bruised up and still reeling from his battle with Bron Breakker. The interview aired after RAW’s Netflix anniversary special at the Barclays Center, which featured wild interference from The Vision, a table spot, and chaotic brawling with Penta, Rey Mysterio, and Dragon Lee.

“Yeah, we were at the Barclays Center. Yeah… I did. I survived. I think I made it through.”

When the hosts noted how rough he looked, Punk didn’t sugarcoat anything as he said he didn’t know what it’s like to feel like a real human being.

“Yeah. I don’t know what it’s like to feel like a real human being… So, yeah. This is just every day for me. I mean, I don’t think so, but I would be interested to see if we could do some sort of a body swap with, like, a civilian. Jump into my body, and then they could possibly tell me how I feel.”

But it was when they pointed out his bruised ear that Punk summed it all up in one line: “Yeah. That… that happens. Last night I wrestled a maniacal meathead that was trying to kill me.”

As of now, WWE has not officially commented on Punk’s medical status, but judging by his comments in the post-RAW interview, fans might not have anything to worry about.

What do you think—should CM Punk take time off if he’s hurt, or does the champ need to fight through the pain? Let us know in the comments.
