CM Punk made a remarkable return to in-ring action at WWE SummerSlam 2024 last week, going head-to-head with his heated rival, Drew McIntyre, the same man who put him on the shelf with a triceps injury in January at the Royal Rumble event. The match also featured Seth Rollins as the Special Guest Referee.
In a Behind the Scenes Vlog released by WWE, CM Punk details out an interesting fact about the night he got injured. The Best in the World revealed that his surgeon gave him a timeline to be out of action for nine months.
However, CM Punk determined to get back inside the squared circle sooner, challenged him to return in around five months to which he contradicted that people have also returned in six. He also put SummerSlam as his date to return to the ring in his phone calendar, which ultimately proved to the sight of his comeback to the ring, six months after he got injured.
“I was in a hotel room … in Tampa the night that I got hurt … and I counted out the days. I got on the phone with the surgeon that night and he said ‘oh nine months’ and I said ‘alright I do it in five’ and he said ‘people have done it in six’ and then I counted out the days and exactly six months was 1st of August, today being 3rd of August and I said ‘ok SummerSlam’ and I wrote the return on there and here we are.”
Although Punk did not win the match, his performance was applauded by fans and critics alike. Moreover, on the following edition of RAW, McIntyre once again taunted CM Punk by claiming that his family was still by McIntyre’s side.
With things evidently not settled between the two formidable rivals, we will have to wait and see if a sequel to their SummerSlam match would be planned at an upcoming WWE Premium Live Event.
