CM Punk has always done things his own way—and that includes going directly against WWE management to honor one of his wrestling idols, “Macho Man” Randy Savage.
In his appearance on WWE Break It Down, Punk looked back at a specific gear choice from 2011 that had a lot more meaning behind it than fans may have realized. It wasn’t just about looking good—it was about paying tribute to a legend.
Savage had just passed away, and Punk wanted to do something special to recognize him. He modeled his gear after the iconic pink and yellow tights Savage wore at WrestleMania III during his classic match with Ricky Steamboat. The gear was a visual homage—but not everyone backstage appreciated the tribute.
“Unfortunately, just before this picture, the legendary Randy, Macho Man, Savage passed away. So I wanted to pay homage to a classic pair of gear, twofold really. Like, pink looks great on me, and this is an homage to the gear he wore at WrestleMania III taking on Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat.”
But when someone high up in the WWE saw the gear before the show, they made it clear Punk wasn’t supposed to wear it.
“Now I commissioned my gear maker at this time to make this gear, and I won’t name names, but somebody very high in the office walked past and saw it and found me and said, ‘Do not wear that gear on television.’ And I said, ‘You got it,’ and I wore the gear on television.”
That’s vintage CM Punk—respecting the past while refusing to let corporate politics get in the way of a personal moment.
In classic Punk fashion, this wasn’t just about rebellion—it was about doing what felt right. Randy Savage meant something to him as a fan, and that connection translated into a bold statement in the ring.
Do you think Punk was right to wear the gear despite being told not to? Should WWE have embraced the tribute instead of trying to shut it down? Sound off in the comments—we want to hear from you.
