CM Punk isn’t holding back—and this time, he took a playful jab at The Undertaker’s legendary mystique during his interview with Sports Illustrated. When asked about the old-school approach of staying in character and avoiding media appearances, Punk cracked a sharp joke that had everyone talking.
Punk was asked if he missed the aura that once surrounded pro wrestlers—especially someone like The Undertaker, who famously protected his persona for decades. Without skipping a beat, Punk fired off:
“Do I wish I didn’t have to do interviews? The Undertaker was just lazy. That’s the only reason he did that. He got away with not doing this. That’s why he did it. It wasn’t because he was really dead. I said it.”
While his tone was clearly tongue-in-cheek, Punk followed it up with a more serious reflection on how the industry has evolved in the digital era. Between social media and shows like WWE Unreal, the curtain has been pulled back more than ever before—and Punk admits it’s a tough adjustment for someone who grew up protecting the business.
“Do I wish there was more mystique? You know, it is what you make it. I think… I’m a grown-ass man. I will still protect this business. That’s why I’m kind of wildly uneasy about a lot of this stuff. But I also take it as it comes, you know?”
Despite his discomfort with the transparency, Punk said he’s learned to accept the new landscape of professional wrestling. The mystique may be gone, but that doesn’t mean the magic is.
“One little old CM Punk standing against the current on this isn’t going to change anything. I might as well go with the flow on it. To me, it’s just a new tool to be able to use it to make the magic I make, if that makes sense.”
CM Punk’s mix of sarcasm and sincerity shows just how tricky the modern wrestling world can be for veterans trying to adapt. His comments may raise a few eyebrows, but they also shine a light on the very real shift in how wrestling is presented today.
