CM Punk is no stranger to speaking his mind — and in a new interview, he directly addressed the idea of staying quiet in today’s political climate.
Back in October 2025, Punk reposted content critical of ICE’s actions in Chicago and shared Mayor Brandon Johnson’s response to Donald Trump calling for his arrest. He didn’t add commentary at the time, but the message was clear. Now, months later, he’s explaining why he doesn’t believe in sitting on the sidelines.
While appearing on The Morning Moshpit on February 27, 2026, Punk was asked how he manages to stay unapologetically himself in what the interviewer described as a “weird environment” where many people are afraid to speak up. Before getting specific, Punk addressed the broader climate and the idea that public figures should avoid politics altogether.
“You know, I mean, especially in the climate we’re in now where everyone’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to be political.’ I really feel like everything’s political. You make your choices, especially with your dollar, and it’s hard to escape everything.”
He then shifted to his personal philosophy, explaining that while he doesn’t go out of his way to provoke controversy, he also refuses to silence himself just to keep others comfortable.
“My deal is I try to do no harm. But ultimately, I feel like if you try to censor yourself, if you try to bite your tongue, you’re always going to wind up pissing somebody off.”
As the conversation continued, Punk used a current example involving athletes visiting the White House to point out what he sees as hypocrisy in how people define “being political.” He made it clear that even public appearances can carry political weight.
“I understand, like right now with all the hockey players dealing with the gold medal stuff, I think a lot of them are being pretty dumb. But I’m not getting invited to the White House. I would not get invited to the White House, so it’s not a decision I have to make.”
He followed that up by calling out what he views as selective outrage — where political engagement is criticized until it aligns with someone’s personal beliefs.
“A lot of them are saying, ‘Oh, don’t be political,’ and then they’re showing up to the White House. Well, guess what? That’s politics. You are being political.”
Finally, Punk summed up his perspective on why the “don’t be political” argument often falls apart in practice.
“It’s unfortunate, but great for some people. Some people love it. Everyone always says don’t be political until it’s their politics — and then they’re rooting for it.”
The message this time wasn’t subtle. Punk believes silence is still a choice — and a political one at that. Whether fans agree with him or not, the World Heavyweight Champion has made it clear that he’s not interested in softening his stance to avoid backlash.
