CM Punk is forever associated with Living Colour’s ”Cult of Personality” song, but some people want to see him bring back “This Fire Burns.” While the demand continues, Punk has addressed bringing back that song.
While speaking to GQ, CM Punk made it clear he has no plans to bring back his old theme song, “This Fire Burns.” Instead, he explained how “Cult of Personality” became his iconic WWE entrance track.
The song has been special to him since it was released in 1989, back when he was playing Little League for a team called The Indians. When Punk was renegotiating his WWE contract, he knew Vince McMahon disliked paying for licensed music.
Punk used that to his advantage, saying the only way he would re-sign was if WWE secured “Cult of Personality.” Punk expected Vince to reject the request and was ready to walk away, but to his surprise, Vince agreed.
“No, I can’t, and I’m gonna tell you why, even though it’s none of your business. Cult of Personality’ is iconic. ‘This Fire Burns’ is also iconic. But come on, we’re talking about Living Color and Vernon Reid. That song’s been with me since 1989 when it came out, and I was on the Little League team, The Indians.
I knew it was time to make ‘Cult of Personality’ my official WWE theme song when I was renegotiating my contract and I knew how much Vince McMahon hated paying for licensed music. So I said, ‘Guess what, pal? The only way I’m re-signing is if I get this song.’
I honestly thought he was going to say no and I’d just peace out and go on vacation. But he said yes—and, well, now here I am.”
While some fans still love “This Fire Burns,” Punk has made it clear that his current theme is essential to his legacy. As long as he’s competing in WWE, those famous opening notes of “Cult of Personality” will keep exciting crowds all over the world and that’s never changing.
