Danhausen’s debut at WWE Elimination Chamber continues to spark debate, but CJ Perry believes the moment perfectly captured what makes WWE different from every other combat sport.

During a recent episode of TMZ’s Inside the Ring, Perry and host Branson Quirk discussed the mysterious crate angle that WWE built up for weeks leading into the premium live event. Speculation ran wild ahead of the reveal, with some fans wondering if it could be Chris Jericho, Rusev, or even Perry herself.

Instead, the crate opened to reveal Danhausen — a result that received a mixed reaction inside the arena, particularly from the Chicago crowd. Perry said the moment worked for her because it brought back an element she feels WWE should never abandon: pure entertainment. She explained that the company has leaned more into a sports-style presentation in recent years, but she still believes WWE thrives when it mixes serious wrestling with spectacle and personality.

“I was so excited. It made me really excited again about WWE because lately we’ve been doing all — well, not just lately — but in the Triple H era and also in the ESPN era we really have to push a lot of sports, sports more than anything. And that’s very understandable. It’s professional wrestling, it’s on ESPN right now, so it has to be very sports driven.”

Perry admitted she misses some of the unpredictable segments and over-the-top entertainment moments that were more common during earlier eras of WWE programming.

“I feel like in the old regime we had a lot more comedy acts. We had a lot more dance acts, and I’ve kind of been missing the entertainment. I’ve been missing someone going through a cake possibly.”

That’s why Danhausen’s theatrical debut worked for her, even if the reaction inside the arena wasn’t universally positive.

“This is World Wrestling Entertainment, okay? This is not World Wrestling Sportsmanship. This is World Wrestling Entertainment. I personally love the entertainment part.”

Perry went on to explain that WWE works best when it balances dramatic storytelling, comedy, and big matches featuring the company’s biggest stars.

“I love the soap opera stories. I love the comedy acts. I love the cakes. I love the flags and the medals. And then yes, absolutely, let’s have Roman versus CM Punk. Let’s have Randy versus Drew. Let’s have those hard-hitting title matches. But also I want some entertainment.”

She also addressed the backlash that followed the reveal, pointing out that certain wrestling cities are known for reacting strongly when surprises don’t match their expectations.

“Chicago, Philly — certain towns are very heel. They walk to the beat of their own drum.”

While the crowd reaction included loud boos after Danhausen emerged from the crate, Perry said she still enjoyed the moment and believes it accomplished exactly what WWE wanted. Perry also suggested that the reaction could actually help Danhausen in the long run, since polarizing characters often gain attention quickly.

“I understand that he’s going to be a little bit of a polarizing figure for a second and that’s okay. We love polarizing. Polarizing gets people talking on both sides.”

She added that the weeks of buildup around the mystery crate gave WWE a strong platform to introduce a new character in a memorable way. The reveal may have caught some fans off guard, but Perry believes the character will eventually connect with the audience as people get more familiar with him.

“What better way to make a splash, a debut for a new character than to do all this buildup for weeks talking about it and then put this big crate at Elimination Chamber? I mean, this is a beautiful way to debut.”

“For all the new fans who just met him and are not there yet, just give it time. Just be patient. Give it time.”

Danhausen’s arrival instantly became one of the most talked-about moments from the show, and with WrestleMania season underway, WWE clearly has more plans ahead for the eccentric character.
