Christian Cage didn’t hold back when he came face-to-face with MVP during a backstage segment on on the June 26 episode of AEW Collision—and his shot at MVP’s criminal record left the crowd stunned.

The tension kicked off as Christian, standing proudly beside Nick Wayne, made it clear that his sights are locked on the AEW Tag Team Championships. MVP approached with a warning, but things quickly got personal.

MVP tried to keep it civil at first, giving Christian his flowers for his tag team success and the potential of Wayne, but questioning whether they were ready for The Hurt Syndicate.

“What an impressive debut. I’m impressed. And I also heard what you said last week about becoming the first father and son tag team champions in AEW. Lofty aspirations, I must say, but coming from you, Christian Cage, one of the greatest tag team champions in history, that gives that statement a lot of gravitas. However, I mean, as great as you are, your partner’s your kid… as talented as you are… congratulations, champ… he’s still just a kid. And you got a lot of respect for you. Don’t do this to yourself. You and Nick against the Hurt Syndicate.”

Christian wasn’t having it—and that’s when he buried MVP with a savage reminder of his past.

“Are you trying to convince yourself or are you trying to convince me? Because see, MVP, I’ve always lived by the rule: never trust a criminal. And you weren’t even a good criminal, because you got caught. But here’s the more disturbing part about it… you were actually a better criminal than you are a manager.”

Christian didn’t stop there. He sent one final warning to MVP and anyone standing between him and the AEW Tag Titles.

“I am the patriarch. I run AEW. And if I want those AEW Tag Team Championships, they’re as good as ours. Do I make myself clear?”

MVP, caught off guard but holding his composure, kept his response short.

“Crystal, Christian.”

The back-and-forth added even more heat to the brewing rivalry between The Hurt Syndicate and Christian’s camp—and with shots like that being fired, things are bound to get uglier before they’re settled in the ring.

MVP has been open about his troubled past long before his WWE and AEW fame. At 16 years old, MVP—real name Alvin Burke Jr.—was convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping, spending over nine years behind bars. After turning his life around, MVP has often spoken about how prison changed him and motivated him to pursue professional wrestling as a second chance.

Despite rebuilding his life, Christian didn’t hesitate to throw that part of MVP’s past right back in his face—making it clear this feud is as personal as it gets.
