Cedric Alexander first gained attention in WWE during the Cruiserweight Classic tournament in 2016. While he found some success in the company, he was ultimately released last month. With that said, Alexander has now made it clear that his WWE release felt like a weight off his shoulders.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Cedric Alexander stated that once he got the call for his WWE release, it was a pressure off his shoulders. Instead of being upset, he saw it as an opportunity to explore new possibilities.
“Everything’s fine. You know, once I got that news, I wasn’t even mad. I kind of felt like a pressure was lifted off my shoulders. Oh wow, I’m free to do other things, cool, all right, let’s see what happens.”
Alexander revealed he got the call on a Friday night while working out at his home gym. In the middle of doing squats, his phone rang, and he noticed the 203 area code, which usually meant WWE was calling. When he answered, he was told that he was being let go. He stayed calm and simply accepted the news.
The person on the call apologized for telling him on a Friday and mentioned that he no longer needed to attend an NXT house show the next day. They also confirmed that he had to wait out the usual 90-day non-compete period, but could reach out if he needed anything.
“I was expecting to be angry and frantic. Actually, funny enough they called Friday night. I was in the middle of a leg workout. I’m doing squats, and my phone starts ringing. So I put the weight down, because I have a gym in my house so for me I’m just working out all hours of the day. So I pick up the phone, and I received the dreaded 203 number. I’m like, Okay, what’s gonna happen? I don’t remember the guy’s name. I think he said it was Will from TR.
And I was like, Yeah, sure. What’s up? He goes, ‘Sorry, we’re gonna release you from your contract.’ My initial reaction was okay, cool. He goes, ‘Yeah, sorry to get this news on a Friday.’ So I had an NXT house show tomorrow, so I don’t do that anymore. That was my first question, too. He goes, No, you’re all good, just the 90 days and if you need anything else, I was like, okay, cool.”
During his time in WWE, Alexander won the Cruiserweight Championship, 24/7 Championship, and Raw Tag Team Championship. His release came as a surprise to many fans, especially since he had signed a new contract in September 2024.
Now that Cedric Alexander is no longer a WWE star, he has the opportunity to start fresh on the independent scene or sign with AEW, TNA, or NJPW. With his talent and experience, he would be a great addition to any promotion.
