Carmelo Hayes is keeping it real about life in WWE, especially when it comes to how quickly fan support can change. During a recent appearance on the Battleground Podcast, Hayes opened up about his time in NXT and what he learned about staying on top in front of unpredictable wrestling audiences.
While discussing his rise in NXT during the “Melo Don’t Miss” era, Hayes was asked when he realized the crowd was fully behind him. Instead of embracing the idea that fans were locked in for good, Hayes made it clear that crowd loyalty is never guaranteed and can shift in an instant depending on who’s gaining momentum.
He explained that understanding fan behavior was something he learned early, especially while working alongside Trick Williams. Hayes said he already knew that crowds often support whoever is on the rise — but that support can disappear just as fast when attention moves to the next breakout star.
“That crowd is wishy-washy even still to this day. Like that crowd, they're never yours. They're who's hot in the moment. And I knew that and I understood that. And it was one of those things where, you know, I had even did a promo with Trick where it's like they love you on the rise and then when it's the next guy's turn, they'll switch on you. And that's the truth, man. That crowd, you know, they'll make it, but they'll also break you.”
With WrestleMania season always bringing intense pressure and new stars stepping into the spotlight, Hayes’ outlook feels especially timely. He’s clearly not taking fan reactions for granted and understands that staying at the top takes consistency, confidence, and constant reinvention.
As WWE continues building its next generation of talent, Hayes’ comments offer a glimpse into how today’s performers are thinking about longevity in an industry built on momentum and reaction.
