Carlito is not holding back when it comes to WWE’s current mindset of the Latino audience, as he has now called them out for not understanding fans.

While speaking on Molusco TV, Carlito criticized WWE for failing to understand the Latino audience. He said he has been vocal for years about WWE not understanding the Latino market. He even recalled telling Vince McMahon directly, and Vince admitting that the company didn’t really know Latinos or their culture.

WWE has often approached the market with a narrow view, assuming that Mexicans only care about Mexican wrestlers and Puerto Ricans only care about Puerto Rican wrestlers, without recognizing how diverse and interconnected Latino culture is, especially in wrestling.

“What I’ve been saying for years — even back when I told Vince — WWE doesn’t know the Latino market. People think because Vince is the owner, he’s in control of everything, but even he told me, ‘That’s the problem. We don’t know Latinos. We don’t know the culture.’ WWE thinks if it’s Mexico, it’s just Mexicans. If it’s Puerto Rico, it’s only Puerto Ricans. They don’t get how it all mixes, how diverse our culture really is, especially in wrestling.

They still don’t understand the Latino audience. They are ignorant of the Latino experience. I think they thought in Mexico, Mexicans only care about Mexicans, and Puerto Ricans only care about Puerto Ricans. They don’t understand the connection Latinos have.”

Carlito explained that WWE still doesn’t get it because they don’t have Latino writers, bosses, or decision-makers. Without that, they can’t really connect with the audience. Carlito tried to explain it, but it wasn’t up to him. He believes it could have been something huge, whether it was with Dominik Mysterio or not.

Carlito also said working with AAA would have been easy since he speaks the language, has wrestled there before, and already has a connection with their fans. But WWE never went through with it, and to him it was a big missed opportunity.

“We are very regional in that sense. They’re ignorant of the Latino market because they don’t have anyone who writes Latino, they don’t have Latino bosses. They don’t really understand the market.

I tried to explain it to them, but it was out of my control. If it had happened, it would have been huge. Forget if it was with Dominik or not — it would have been something big.

With AAA, I speak the language, they know me, I worked with them a couple of times. But like I said, it was out of my control, so what can we do?”

Carlito left WWE after he confirmed WWE didn’t choose to renew his contract, but it’s clear he feels there are areas WWE could improve on. Whether WWE will listen to him is a different story altogether, but fans understand why he said what he did.

Do you agree with Carlito that WWE doesn’t fully understand the Latino audience? What steps should WWE take to better connect with Latino fans around the world? Share your thoughts in the comments!
