The Rock may claim he owns WWE, but not everyone thinks he needs to step in the ring at WrestleMania 41. WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray is the latest to weigh in, saying the company should stop leaning on past legends to sell tickets and let today’s stars take the spotlight.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray didn’t hold back about why The Rock doesn’t need a match at WrestleMania this year. “Do I want The Rock to be at WrestleMania? With as entertaining as The Rock is and with what he can do for someone, of course, I want The Rock there. But this year, do they need The Rock there? Absolutely not,” he said. “I believe that what they are doing now in the WWE, they don’t need him for that. And there’s going to come a time in WWE where they’re going to have to stop relying on the Rocks, the Austins, and the Undertakers of the world.”
The Rock returned to SmackDown this week, throwing a curveball into the Cody Rhodes storyline. Instead of demanding a title match, he told Cody he wants him to be his champion, pitching it as a corporate move. He even claimed he wanted Cody’s soul before telling him to give his answer at Elimination Chamber: Toronto on March 1.
During the post-SmackDown press conference, The Rock made an interesting remark that suggests he might not actually be wrestling. “In the world of pro-wrestling, everything culminates in a match. What I love about the character of the Final Boss and Cody Rhodes is it’s not about the title, it never has to culminate in a match.”
So, does this mean WWE is keeping The Rock out of the ring this year? Or is this just another swerve before he inevitably steps up to fight?
